Available Recording(s)

Beethoven won particular success in 1797 with his Quintet in E flat, Op. 16, for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, first performed on 6 April 1797 and dedicated to Prince Schwarzenberg, an early benefactor. At the same time Beethoven arranged the work for piano quartet, keeping the original tempo directions and the character of the work. The first movement has a dotted rhythm introduction, marked Grave, leading to a sonata form Allegro, ma non troppo. The slow movement, in B flat major, is followed by a final Rondo, which brings opportunities for pianistic display.
