One of the main protagonists of this period in French music and a member of Les Six was Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), whose exuberant and curious personality always pushed him to travel and experiment, taking the best of what the musical traditions offered him. It is no coincidence that his first great success, the Cinéma-fantaisie 'LeBoeuf s ur le toit', Op. 58 (1919) – from whose success the cabaret derived its name – is a piece that quotes Brazilian melodies heard during the war years in Rio de Janeiro. In London 1920, on the other hand, Milhaud was able to hear his first (white) jazz band, that of Billy Arnold. Also, from this experience Milhaud soon drew a new piece, Caramel mou, Op. 68, a shimmy performed in 1921. Written for jazz band (clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano and percussion) with a nonsense text by Jean Cocteau (Prenez une jeune fille, / Remplissez-la de glace et de gin), and with a solo dancer.
