In 1884, Debussy won first prize, this time with the cantata L'Enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son). He seems to have composed in a conservative manner befitting of the academic competition; but he also injected a strong dose of originality. Looking back on Debussy's life, it is interesting to note how this originality provoked contrasting comments from the press - as, indeed, Debussy's music would continue to do.
