A scherzo is, by contrast, generally a short piece with a witty temperament. Played here on the Pleyel piano, Chopin's Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 31 provides a stark sonic contrast to the preceding Berceuse on the Steinway piano. The brilliance of the Pleyel in its shimmering resonance is, through this Scherzo, reflected particularly well. The Scherzo of 1837, composed in Paris, is among the virtuosic pinnacles of Romantic piano music. The character is capricious, yet constant and concentrated, almost unworldly. The chorale-esque Trio in this A-B-A structure provides a calming anchor between the tempestuous A sections. The dreamy melody, profound harmonies and virtuosic runs distinguish this multi-facetted Scherzo.
